Iron Sharpens Iron: What Spiritual Accountability Looks Like

From the sermon preached on August 2, 2026
Iron sharpens iron because two blades pressed together wear each other into something sharper. That is exactly what spiritual accountability is supposed to do inside a real friendship. It is not a program, a small group sign-up sheet, or a well-worded devotional.

Spiritual accountability is one person who loves you enough to tell you the truth, and one person humble enough to actually hear it without walking away. Most people in Iroquois County can name a dozen friendly faces and still go home to an empty kind of quiet, because being known by name is not the same as being known. This post looks at what iron sharpens iron actually costs in friendship, why real spiritual accountability is so rare, and how you find or become the kind of friend who sharpens instead of just showing up.

What Does Spiritual Accountability Look Like Between Godly Friends?

Godly friends and accountability sounds like a churchy phrase until you picture the actual moment. It is a friend who sits across from you, knows something is off, and says it out loud instead of letting it slide. "The sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel" (Proverbs 27:9), and earnest counsel is not flattery.

It is a friend willing to risk the friendship to tell you what you need to hear, because they love you more than they love your comfort. That willingness is the real shape of spiritual accountability. Godly friends and accountability means someone stays when your life is hard, not just when it is easy.

The text says do not forsake a friend in the day of calamity, because a nearby friend who shows up beats a distant relative who does not. That kind of friend is rare, and most people go years without real spiritual accountability. It takes trust to let someone see the parts of you that are not fine, and godly friends and accountability only grow where that trust is risked first.

If you have never had a friend like that, the honest first step is naming one person you could risk that kind of honesty with this week; not a whole circle, just one.

How Do I Filter My Thoughts Through the Word of God?

Filtering your thoughts through the word of God is not about having the right head knowledge. It is about letting scripture catch what should not be running your life before it turns into words and actions. Pastor Ryan compared it to filtering paint before it hits a wall, because whatever is hiding in the mix shows up later as a lump or a stain you cannot smooth out.

Filtering your thoughts through the word of God works the same way with resentment, fear, or the thought that will not leave you alone at 2 a.m. If it does not match what God says is true, it does not get to stay. A prudent person sees danger and steps back from it, but the simple keep walking into the same trouble because they never filtered the thought that led them there.

Filtering your thoughts through the word of God also shapes how you talk to the people around you, whether that is a neighbor down the road or a family member you call at the wrong hour. Being considerate with your words is part of the same filter.
Tonight, try naming one thought you have been carrying and asking honestly whether it lines up with what scripture actually says about you.

What Does It Mean to Be Sharpening One Another Spiritually?

Sharpening one another spiritually is not a comfortable metaphor once you sit with it. Two blades pressed together do not glide, they grind, and that friction is exactly what makes both of them useful again. In the original language, the word can mean encouragement, but it can also mean bothering or annoying someone, and that double meaning matters.

Sharpening one another spiritually will sometimes feel like an irritation before it feels like a gift, because a friend calling out something true in you can sting before it helps. Pastor Ryan told the story of his wife Melinda, who led a stranger to Christ not with a program but with an arm-wrestling match and then an invitation to Bible study that the woman almost did not accept.

Sharpening one another spiritually looks like David and Jonathan, or like Priscilla and Aquila pulling Apollos aside to teach him more accurately. It looks like a friend who taught someone to pray on his knees instead of just talking about prayer. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one, because a dull blade slips instead of cutting clean, and a friendship with no honesty in it slips the same way when it matters most.

This week, ask one person in your life the question Pastor Ryan asked his congregation: what area do you need to be transformed in, and who could help you get there?

How Does Proverbs 27 Explain Iron Sharpens Iron?

Proverbs 27 lays out a working picture of what real friendship costs and what it gives back, using ordinary images like oil, iron, and a neighbor's front porch. "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another" (Proverbs 27:17) sits at the center of the chapter as the clearest single statement of the idea.

That verse is what gives iron sharpens iron its name in everyday conversation. Iron sharpens iron only works when two people are willing to press against each other instead of staying at a safe, polite distance. The table below lines up the chapter's contrast between shallow connection and the real thing.

Shallow Connection

Real Accountability

Flattery that avoids hard truths

Earnest counsel spoken in love

A distant relative who is unreachable

A near neighbor who shows up

A loud, showy blessing at the wrong time

A considerate word at the right time

Friendship with no friction

Finding a Friend Who Tells You the Truth, Right Where You Are

There is a particular kind of lonely that comes from being known by everyone in town and understood by almost no one, the kind that does not show up on anyone's prayer list because everything looks fine from the outside. That ache for one honest friend does not go away by moving or by staying put; it just waits quietly under the surface. Whether you are nearer Ashkum, Watseka, or Goodland, or anywhere from Clifton and Gilman to Milford and Danforth, Trinity Church is a place close by where that kind of friendship can actually start.

Be the Friend You Have Been Looking For

Solomon wrote these proverbs because a kingdom that had drifted from God needed to relearn something simple: people were not meant to filter their thoughts or grow in wisdom alone. Iron sharpens iron because two blades were made to work on each other, not sit in separate drawers.
Ashkum, Goodland, and Watseka each have a seat with your name on it, with no dress code and no expectation that you have it together before you walk in. Take one step toward that kind of community and plan your visit here, whichever campus is closest to you.
If you feel like a Sunday morning is too big a step right now, you are welcome to connect here and send a prayer request instead; someone will actually read it and pray.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does iron sharpens iron apply to friendships?
It means two people committed to honesty make each other stronger the same way two blades pressed together become sharper through friction. A real friend tells you the truth even when it costs something, and a wise friend receives that truth without pulling away. Proverbs 27:17 uses that image because encouragement without honesty rarely changes anything.
What does Proverbs say about true friendship?
Proverbs 27 says a true friend gives earnest counsel, stays present during hard seasons, and is worth more nearby than a distant relative far away. It also warns that flattery and showy blessings are not the same as real care. True friendship in Proverbs is measured by honesty and presence, not by how good it feels in the moment.
Why do we need Christian friends in our lives?
We need Christian friends because scripture describes a kind of wisdom, correction, and encouragement that is very hard to receive alone. The early church in Acts devoted themselves to fellowship alongside teaching and prayer, treating it as essential rather than optional. A trusted friend can see blind spots you cannot see in yourself and can point you back to God when you drift.
How do I know if a friendship is helping me grow spiritually?
A friendship that helps you grow will include honesty, not just comfort; you will occasionally hear something that stings before it helps. It will also be mutual, meaning you are being asked to grow and give counsel in return, not just receive it. If a friendship never includes any honest correction in either direction, it may be pleasant but it is not doing the sharpening work Proverbs describes.
What is a practical way to start filtering my thoughts through scripture?
A simple starting practice is reading one proverb or one psalm each night and asking whether a specific thought or worry from that day lines up with what you read. Over time this becomes a habit of testing what runs through your mind against what God actually says, rather than assuming every thought deserves airtime. Consistency matters more than length; a few honest minutes each night builds the habit.
